Most of us meet radon as a map. You type in a city, a shaded map loads, and you either relax or you start worrying. It feels like the whole answer, because radon really does begin in the ground. It comes from uranium decaying in soil and bedrock, and some parts of Canada simply have more of it to give.
But a map only describes what is available underneath a house. It says nothing about how much of that gas finds its way inside, or how long it lingers once it does. That second half of the story is the building itself, and it is the half most of us have backwards. The instinct is that a drafty century home is the risky one and a well-sealed new build is safe. The national numbers point almost the other way.
The 2024 Cross-Canada Radon Survey, built on nearly 70,000 long-term tests, found single-detached houses averaging 93.4 Bq/m³, with one in five at or above Canada's guideline of 200 Bq/m³ and another one in four between 100 and 199. Evict Radon's national study also found semi-detached houses averaging 61.5 and row houses 51.8, which is the first hint that the building matters: the more of a home that touches soil and the fewer walls it shares, the more radon it tends to hold.

What follows are nine features of a Canadian home that push the odds in one direction or the other. Every one of them is answerable from your own kitchen table, without special equipment, a contractor, or a permit search. Some carry hard Canadian numbers behind them, some carry only a measured direction, and I have been careful to tell you which is which as we go — because the honest version of this list is more useful to you than a tidy one.
