Health Canada and CPSC Issue Joint Recall for Bellevue and Oaklynn Models Sold Through Costco — Free Repair Kit Available

Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission jointly recalled Universal Broadmoore canopy bed frames on April 2, 2026, after the overhead canopy beams on two models were found to collapse — primarily when the bed is moved — posing impact and injury hazards to consumers. Five incidents have been reported in the United States, with four consumers sustaining shoulder and head contusion injuries after being struck by a falling beam. No incidents have been reported in Canada as of March 18, 2026.
The recall covers two models — the Bellevue and the Oaklynn — both sold in king and queen sizes through Costco.com. Approximately 516 units were sold in Canada, alongside 5,600 in the United States. Samson International, the North Carolina–based manufacturer, is offering a free repair kit. But for Canadian homeowners, there may be a second option worth exploring: Costco's satisfaction guarantee.
The recall applies to four specific product configurations, all sold under the Universal Broadmoore brand name and manufactured in Vietnam by Samson International.
The manufacturer name "Samson International" and the model number are printed on a manufacturing label located on the inside of the bed frame, on the right-hand side when viewed from the foot of the bed. If you purchased a canopy bed frame from Costco.com between February 2025 and March 2026 in the $900–$1,000 price range, check for this label before assuming you are not affected.
If your bed matches one of the model numbers above, do not move it. The canopy beams are most likely to collapse during movement. Leave the bed in place and contact the manufacturer for the free repair kit.
The core issue is structural: the canopy beams — the horizontal bars running above the mattress — can detach or collapse, particularly when the bed frame is repositioned. This is not a gradual wear problem. The beams can fall suddenly and with enough force to cause contusion injuries to the head and shoulders of anyone nearby.
Five incidents in the United States confirm this is not a theoretical risk. Four of those five resulted in physical injuries. The fact that all reported collapses occurred during movement narrows the immediate danger — a bed sitting undisturbed in its current position is lower risk — but it does not eliminate it. Any weakened joint could fail under vibration, leaning, or accidental contact.
This hazard category — overhead structural failure in a sleeping area — is one Health Canada flags more broadly in its guidance on furniture and appliance safety. Furniture that appears stable can become hazardous if it is top-heavy, placed on an uneven surface, or used in unintended ways. With a canopy bed, the elevated beam structure adds a variable that standard bed frames do not have: a heavy component directly above the sleeper.
If you own one of the affected models, here is the sequence to follow.
Step 1: Confirm the model. Check the label on the inside right rail (viewed from the foot of the bed) for the Samson International name and one of the four model numbers listed above.
Step 2: Stop moving the bed immediately. Do not reposition, disassemble, or attempt to repair the frame yourself. The canopy beams are most likely to collapse during movement.
Step 3: Contact Samson International for the free repair kit. The kit includes four metal brackets and mounting hardware designed to reinforce the canopy beam connections. You can reach them by:
Step 4: Consider your Costco options. Costco Canada's satisfaction guarantee covers general merchandise returns with no strict time limit for most product categories. Beds are not listed among Costco's return exceptions (which include electronics, certain jewellery, and bullion). While the guarantee does not specifically reference recalled products, affected buyers may be able to pursue a return or exchange through Costco's standard process. Contact Costco member services to confirm eligibility for your specific purchase.
Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, recalled products cannot be redistributed, sold, or given away in Canada. If you own an affected bed, do not list it on a resale marketplace, donate it, or pass it to another household. This prohibition applies regardless of whether the repair kit has been installed.
A canopy bed frame collapsing on someone while they sleep — or while they are trying to rearrange a bedroom — is not a minor product defect. It is an overhead structural failure in the one room where people are most vulnerable.
The broader pattern here is worth noting. This is the third product recall Homeowner.ca has covered in recent months involving household items with failure modes that directly threaten occupant safety — following recalls on e-NRG bioethanol fireplace fuel and Frigidaire gas ranges with delayed oven ignition. Each involved a product performing a routine function — heating a room, cooking dinner, holding up a bed canopy — and failing in a way that put people at physical risk.
For anyone buying furniture online, this recall is a reminder to build one habit into your purchasing routine: check the Health Canada Recalls and Safety Alerts database before and after purchasing.
